“The skills I learned will increase the opportunity to restore a relationship with my currently estranged daughter, and to support her if/when she is ready to resume contact. The leaders commitment, honesty and and empathy enabled participants to share experiences and reveal and discuss how their efforts went to try to implement strategies learned, without fear or shame. Hearing others is so much more helpful to understanding these concepts, and practicing their implementation, than just reading about it could ever be. The group interaction is valuable to learning, and also to feeling less isolated.”
Jane, Western Australia
“I was trying to learn everything I could since my child’s diagnosis from books or videos. These were confusing and contradictory and it was impossible to know who or what to believe. There was very little hope. The Family Connections course, and the fact that it was facilitated by those with lived experience, cleared a path through all the noise and led me to a clear understanding of what I was dealing with, how it could appear, what it was and what it wasn’t, and taught me practical tools and approaches to manage situations. As a direct result of the DEAR MAN learning, for example, I was able to have one of the most important conversations with my child that cleared up misunderstandings on both sides and has created a path to open communication that was not there before. “

“Thank you. BPD is hugely misunderstood (as I am sure you are aware) and having your child diagnosed with something that is so misrepresented is terrifying. I am confident that my family would be in a space of just surviving, and barely at that, if I had not been able to attend this Family Connections course and learn from others the truths and skills needed to manage an individual with BPD. I am extremely grateful to have been able to attend this course. I hope that some of this learning trickles down to the mental health professionals as well as misunderstanding is rife in that field too. I have had to educate mental health professionals on the things I have learned – I will never stop advocating for my child but it is additionally exhausting to have to combat misinformation in the very people who should be there to help.”
Sally, Wollongong
“I loved everything about the Family Connections program and feel very empowered to help my loved one. I was apprehensive to do an online course as I felt I may not get much out of it and would therefore not commit to it fully. The small group size made the program very personable and easy to engage and ask for clarification if needed. Lisa and Carol made me feel very validated in how I felt and where my skills were at in dealing with my loved one. I looked forward to my Monday night group and seeing how everyone else was getting on with their week. Having a loved one with emotional dysregulation and self-harm can feel incredibly isolating, the group helped me see that I’m not alone and gain ideas and insights into how others travel this path.”
Rachel, Melbourne
“The Family Connections Course has been amazing: I can see the change in my person as a direct result of my attending this course. Even just by this she has felt validated. Brilliant thank you.”
